I am taking IB art. We have to chose a theme to create different pieces of artwork about. My theme is "Urban Culture", such as city streets/buildings, hiphop, fashion, graffiti, stuff like that. I also thought it would be a good idea if I did pieces showing both the negative and positive sides of urban culture. But I can't think of much.
Negatives: violence, poverty, loss of individuliaty (people mimick celebirties on tv/magazines)
Positives: ???
It would really help if I could get some ideas for BOTH positive and negatives sides of urban culture.. THANKS
I'm breaking this down a little:
graffiti; pros- allows a new breed of artists to show case their talents, which up until recent years havent really been recognised as genuine art; allows for lower socio-economic classed people to express and protest
cons- many people who just 'tag' stuff are being disrespectful to historical sites or other people's belonging; this tagging also highlights the immaturity of vandal-groups as people challenge each other to tag things they shouldnt, which also highlights the gang mentality of youth on the streets (violence)
fashion; pros- inspirational as people break through the walls of convention to bring to life a world of imagination and expression
cons- encourages materialistic thinking and as you've said loss of individuality
hiphop; for the positive aspects I'd start from the beginning and show that hiphop was a medium created by the poorer youth of society, which can symbolise that poorer people can still have an effect on the world.
the downside being that hiphop music has created rifts in society and spawned gang violence.
buildings and streets; pros- shows the power and ingenuity humans are capable of
cons- representative of ignorance towards the environment; the earth was here first and slowly we are chipping away at its abundance for our materialistic wants
