Gangs in new zealand?
I have just moved to new zealand from australia. I love it here and i wouldn't live anywere else but I have been told that there are gangs here. I live in Nelson but I have never seen any members.
I heard they are bad in south auckland. How bad are they there. Does any body have any personal experiance with them? Is it safe to walk down the street in Otara in manakau with out being attacked?

South auckland looks like a nice place. You have the water all around you. Why do you have to ruin it with graffiti and gangs!

Well said. I have had some encounters with what they call patched gang members, but those were merely visual encounters, meaning I saw them driving about in their cars. The symbol which denotates the Mongrel Mob is a skull with a steel helmet, sometimes displayed on rear windows of cars. The Mongrel Mob is also the movement you are most likely referring to. It is, if I am not misinformed, an organized crime syndicate, somehow affiliated with the black power movement which allegedly exists among maori circles.
I have to say that I don't think those movements are in any way as aggressive or menacing as the types of things I have seen in England and the US.
Letting them get on with their business and staying out of their way is the thing to do.
Whenever you hear about bodies being found somewhere in Northern NZ or home invasions and weird shootings, it is almost always linked to internal gang stuff to do with those groups and those involved with them. Their mainstay appears to be the illegal narcotics trade.
Chin up, friend. This still is the most beautiful place in the world, but since the venue is Planet Earth, and since there is pretty much nothing else to complain about around here, that point seems to be the mandatory frustration allotment we get for being human beings.
