How to do stencil graffiti?

I am not interested in any lectures regarding the legality of street art so please do not give me one.

I am interested in learning how to do stencil graffiti. Most tutorials online deal with photoshop and I intend to actually draw out my stencils. I would love more information on layering and cutting the stencils. So how do you do it?

I'm not extremely knowledgeable on the topic, but I know the general idea since I attempted for one of my art assignments in high school (so nothing sketchy or illegal ). Essentially, I learned that it really depends on a few factors. First, you need to know how many colors you want to use. This is important as each color typically needs a separate layer. Second, you have to understand some inherent problems, such as if you want "holes" in your design. If you think about letters, if you try to make a "P" stencil for example you can't create the hole because that part will be cut out. You'll understand better when you try. So one option would be to use white spray paint. Another would be to split it in two. First, make your design. The material you use doesn't really matter, just make sure when you spray it doesn't leak through. Next, just trace that design to make additional layers. Use an exactoblade to cut out portions of the design. You want to make it as perfect as possible to have clean lines and have everything line up. Now, comes the spraying. To get nice crisp lines, you should invest in spray adhesive. Spray the back of the stencils you've made and stick it to the wall and make sure it's absolutely flat. If it's not, when you peel off the stencil there will be streaks all over. Repeat the process of just laying the stencil down and spraying. Hopefully you'll end up with a nice clean design. All I can say is, good luck. Experience is the most important factor. Learn from mistakes and be creative! Youtube also has some great tutorials if you're more a visual learner.
