Grafitti for starters?

I used to pride myself in being "artistic." I used to sketch and love to draw, but after trying to go to school for it and dealing with pretentious, hipster, artsy kids, I got fed up and haven't done anything in almost 4 years. I just moved to queens and im really getting into graffiti. I love bansky and stencils and i wanna learn how to get into that and other styles of graffiti. Are there any books or sites that can help me out? What kind of materials should I buy? Are there a bunch of materials i should get, kind of like a starter kit for me? Any links? Thanks

if you're passionate about art, hispter kids shouldn't sway that. I went to a private college on scholarship for art, so I definitely got my fill of those pretentious kids. lots of okay art, without any substance.

anyway, if you're wanting to get into graffiti, I suggest buying graffiti magazines, or magazines with sections for graffiti. there are also a bunch of books at barnes and noble on graffiti in the art section. there are entire books for street art, stencil art, sticker art, women graffiti artists, etc. do some research and get into studying graffiti. there are a lot of different styles, and tons of artists who approach those styles from incredibly different perspectives. stencil art, in my opinion falls more into the category of street art (ie, stickers, stencils, etc) than it does graffiti--as it is typically described as aerosol art.

anyway, study lettering styles and forms. if your letters look janky, your graf is gonna look bad, no matter how nice the technique is. check around for some local graf artists. see if some of them would be into teaching you can control and stuff. mainly though, you've gotta get your sketching down before you try to paint any. that is most important.

you can buy tips for the cans online (bombingscience.com). the basic new york fat and new york thin tips will get you going . . . at least until you're ready to start with more detailed stuff. you can pick up your basic krylon at a walmart. and if you're wanting to get into stenciling, it depends on your taste. some people prefer to use things like manila envelopes for their stencils, but I like acetate. when stenciling it helps to make sure your stencil is super flat on the surface . . . spray adhesive will help with this problem. just make sure you hold the paint about 10 inches away from your stencil or it'll drip--then again, you'll get all that down if you practice your can control.

I suggest looking at some sites to study graffiti . . . just don't be biting someone's style.

here are some graffiti and street art sites:

maclaim.de

ta55o.de

daystartribe.com (if they ever open it back up)

ggcrew.com

graffiti.org

obeygiant.com

there are a ton more great artists and crews out. one will most likey lead to others. good luck and have fun with it!
