Harassment at Work
Harassment of the sexual nature at work. This form of harassment occurs far to often. Unfortunately, may victims don't know how to handle this issue. They are fearful of filing a complaint as they think they may lose their job. Fortunately, most companies deal with is issue effectively and efficiently. This article covers various options and angles.
The core definition of sexual harassment is any behavior that can be deemed as humiliating, intimidating, and above all, unwanted. A sexual harassment claim does not have to be made by the victim, it can also be made by other employees who feel distracted or angered by this behavior.
Sexual harassment is not limited to comments or advances. It can also be committed through offensive language and workplace graffiti. Viewing pornography, suggestive screensavers, and other seemingly minor details can be incredibly offensive to other employees.
There are other forms of harassment. If a female employee chooses to wear provocative clothing to work, it may cause a male employee to be distracted. This distraction may cost him a promotion or even a reprimand for a sluggish performance. Many companies are not only initiating a workplace dress code, some are even initiating measurement requirements for skirts and blouses.
Speak with a trusted firend first if you feel you are being treated unfairly. Get their opinion and gather your thoughts. The wise words of an acquaintance can help you figure out which direction you should go in. If you prefer proof of harassment before making a formal complaint to a boss, you are in luck.
Verbal harassment is somewhat easier to prove. Voice recording technology has provided many quality devices that can capture remarks made from across the room. If you want something more than that you should explore the realm of video cameras. Video cameras today are completely flexible. You can purchase models tiny enough to be hidden on your desk or even on your tie. These tools assist in gathering strong evidence quickly.
You can avoid all types of harassment with careful consideration of your workplace. Some employees may find themselves in negative terms with bosses for reporting, however, there are lawsuits in our justice system today regarding harassment. It is in the best intrest of your company to stop harassment as soon as they are made aware of the issue. If not, the preceeding legal action and employee moral could be devistating.
I would suggest speaking with your HR department before you consult an attorney. If your complaint is not handled to your satisfaction, consult and attorney.
