Are movies losing their quality?

I feel like as the years go by, movies are getting dumber and less artistic. There is no subtlety or simplicity left - everything is spelled out for you.

For me the change started sometime in the 80s - things started to go downhill.

Just for an example, if you look at the movies they air on TV during the holidays, all the older stuff is great (It's a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, etc.)

But if you go to the theaters during the holidays, you get crap like "The Santa Claus Part 1, 2, 3 & 4", "Jingle All the Way" & "Bad Santa".

It doesn't just apply to Christmas movies - it's everything. Another good example are teen movies. What used to be American Graffiti and The Breakfast Club is now American Pie 1-99. There is no cleverness to the new teen movies.

Is it just me or is it mostly crap nowadays?

I think you're seeing the wrong movies. 2007 alone gave us such bold, original, and artistic films as:

No Country For Old Men
Juno
There Will Be Blood
The Kite Runner
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Lust, Caution
The Assassination of Jesse James
The King of Kong
Once
Into the Wild
In the Valley of Elah
Michael Clayton
Eastern Promises
The Savages
The Darjeeling Limited
In the Shadow of the Moon
The Orphanage

Hip Hop is dying.

Rap isn't necessarily, but as a culture.

Graffiti is all tagging and gang related nowadays, the creativity is gone.

Breakdancing is still somewhat common, but not as great as it use to be.

Classic DJing is nearly extinct, it's all digital.
