graffiti letters, how did they come about? where did the style come from?
what is the true history behind the style of graffit letters. i suppose i mean wildstyle. the lettering of course. NOT the interlocking 3 dimensional wildstyle burners. i mean the actual graffiti lettering style. how did it come about. what were the influences. i've heard graff letters are somewhat reworkings of arabic characters. i've also heard, that writers may not've known it, but a lot of the lettering style is really based in caligraphy. drop as much shine as you can on this. oldheads, lend me your knowledge.

The style of the letters was mainly due to that writers needed a new way to gain fame. The first way was to make your tag unique. Many script and calligraphic styles were developed. Writers enhanced their tags with flourishes, stars and other designs. Some designs were strictly for visual appeal while others had meaning. Remember, graffiti started in the early 1970's as a political statement. Most of the letters are according to the fashion of the times.
The competitive atmosphere led to the development of actual styles which would depart from the tag styled pieces. Broadway style was introduced in Philadelphia, these letters would evolve in to block letters, leaning letters, and block busters. And later developed Softie letters , more commonly referred to as Bubble letters. Bubble letters and Broadway style were the earliest forms of actual pieces and therefore the foundation of many styles.
