How can graffiti be considered a subculture?


Was it about graffiti and graffiti artists that makes them a subculture of their own?
Aren't they just expressing themselves in a way they can?

If anyone can give me a response that says something about the sociological theories that could be used to explain graffiti, i'd be very grateful

I believe graffiti expands across a wide spectrum, as many graffiti artists have connotations with tattoos, music and dress sense...part of the collection of artists in society that create our culture nowadays... graffiti (DONE WELL) is not vandalism...

The people who think it is a crime are philistines of modern culture.... (in my opinion)

why is it we appreciate renoir and monet, yet the artists of our own time, giving their art to the world for free and for everyone are treated as if theyve destroyed something, such as a blank grey wall???

i have no idea why people complain about graffiti, obviously DAN WUZ ERE isnt the same as something artistically composed and rendered..
i dont understand why people would prefer to see grey concrete everywhere rather than flashes of colour in their life... how boring and mundane...

And why does nobody complain about the stupid advertsising we have no say in being exposed to everyday?? Graffiti doesnt have an ulterior motive, picking at self esteem to make you purchase stuff you dont want, so why dont people object to advertising first??
