How do i write an independent study?


I have to write a study on whether graffiti is art or vandalism and i was looking for some tips on how to get started,
Its for my end of year grade and i have missed quite a lot of the lessons on how to write an independent study so i would eb grateful for any tips.
I'm not looking for someone to write it all for me just a little help to get me started

Start with an introduction to graffiti; how its drawn and designed, the main features of it, what materials are used and the history. It started in New york i think (well grew popular) with gangs etc..look it up. Try and explain why people did it back then and express your opinion on this.

Then, go on to talk about graffiti as vandalism. the cost of cleaning it up. Any groups, laws or anything to do with the prevention of graffiti, talk about them. Try and give quotes you find in website articles etc. that agrees graffiti is vandalism.

Talk about it as an art. Here you can consider the differences between gang graffiti and graffiti artists. If you are allowed to include pictures do so, and find some poor graffiti, e.g where the person has just painted their name in really crappy handwriting. Talk about how they have most likely done this to try and get their name heard, part of the young culture and trying to fit in or show off. Compare this to a graffiti artist such as Banksy, he is a great example. His work is clean, tidy and gives very important messages. I would explain that art is a form of trying to get your voice heard and your feelings expressed, and thats exaclty what Banksy is doing. On the other hand, the graffiti mostly done by 13 year old kids is not art, but vandalism. It is your opinion.

I would conclude by again explaining the difference of banksy as an artist and a teenager as a vandal. However, this is not always the case, this is just va stereotype. Some people argue that all graffiti is vandalism, while some say its all art. Some teenagers do it to look cool, some do see it as a way of expressing themselves;as art. Many will look up to artists like Banksy and might have a message they are trying to portray. Then sum up your opinion in the last paragraph.
