Graffiti, art or crime?
To me graffiti is art in it's purest, it's completely uncensored, nonconforming, and has nothing to do with money.
The general trend among governments and councils is to be anti graffiti, but i want to know, with so many works out there on the streets far more visually interesting and meaningful than the artworks contained in most galleries, are they right?
do you think graffiti is a plague upon the urban jungle, or do you think it is a saving grace, a hidden gem that breaks the monotony?
It is both at once. The notion that something has to be either fully one thing or fully another is false.
Graffiti is censored by every city that has a repainting crew. Most of it looks remarkably similar in style. It has more to do with power than money in that it is a way of taking and marking personal space in areas one does not own.
Graffiti is associated with crime and large amounts of it reduce the values of the homes and businesses that form the tax bases for governments. If they want to pay their bills, they need to protect the source of their income.
Here in sunny California we call them murals. Famous muralists come and paint up a wall, there is an opening ceremony and tourists come look at the walls for years. I don't know anyone who has a vacation planned around seeing graffiti.
